Ireland: The Cliffs of Moher

I was more than excited to see the famous Cliffs of Moher, one of Ireland’s most iconic locations.  While we had been having amazing luck with the weather, it looked like that luck was running out.

As we pulled up to the parking lot and began the walk up to the cliffs the rain started, but that wasn’t going to stop Eva and I from seeing this historic site.

After about 20 minutes or so the rain started roll out and the sun began to peak out from behind the clouds. The green of Ireland is like nothing I’ve ever seen in all of my travels. Highlighted against the blue of the sky and water it looks more like a painting than an actual place.

It was a beautiful sight, however, I couldn’t help but feel like the cliffs lost a little of their majesty to the herds of tourist pouring out form the parking lot below. I was grateful that Eva and I had the experience of seeing similar landscapes without the elbow to elbow congestion.

One unique aspect of the Cliffs were the amount of warning signs spread all across the stone walls surrounding the mountains. Apparently lots of people do dumb things here. For example, there was a clearly marked “end of trail” sign warning people to stay behind a gate. Even with all these warning signs several, (more than 75) people had climbed over the fence to get closer to the cliff edge in order to get better photos. This is dumb.

The wind gusts coming off the cliffs are insane and one super strong gust and someone could easily be swept off, especially with how close some of these tourist were getting to the edge. I can totally understand the desire to get that perfect picture, I found myself crossing the just beyond the gate where I was supposed to stop, but as soon as my brain kicked back in I quickly got myself back to where I belonged, behind the gate and off the edge of the cliff.

One of the many lessons I’ve learned traveling: listen to the warning signs! Remember you don’t know the terrain and the dangers that can be lurking around you. Taking unnecessary risks just isn’t worth it! And neither is that picture.

Stay Behind the Wall!

The Cliffs of Moher were indeed epic and a must see if you are visiting Ireland. However, if you are willing to go off the main tourist map and do some wandering, I’d highly recommend it. There are so many amazing vistas in Ireland waiting to be discovered.
